Hannah Siegfried is a photographer, collage artist, abstract image maker and illustrator whose dream-soaked visuals are utopian nostalgia. Her lifelong interests in magic, flowers, dreams, fashion, and popular culture shape her concept into a pastel world of retro-futurism. Shimmery retrospection with an eye towards the future, she is forever inpsired by rnb music, women, glitter, and the internet age. She is the photographer for The Isis Nicole Magazine.
Be sure to catch Hannah Siegfried’s work at Internet Art Gallery, opening November 21st.
What was your earliest experience with the internet?
I can actually remember the day my family got hooked up to AOL! I think probably my earliest experience was with instant messaging... I was obsessed and would go on every single day. It's really funny because my first experience with graphic design basically was I would make the little buddy icons/avatars used for instant messaging! I would use really emo song lyrics and make the colored pixels move around..and I was part of a whole icon making community! It was crazy
How does your online identity affect your real world identity?
Honestly I owe a lot to the internet! It has really allowed me to be able to connect with and be inspired by other like-minded creative people and and has given me a platform to show my ideas in a very interactive way. Because art is so subjective, and even in a big city it is sometimes hard to find an audience or someone that will show your work, being able to reach a wider audience through the internet to see how they react to my work has helped push me forward. So I guess my online identity has kept me inspired and compelled to continue in an artistic sense. Just having an online presence through xanga and myspace and flickr and being interested in the computer/internet and online communities for such a long time while I was growing up really left an impression on me and all of that built up through the years and exploded into what I make creatively now. So my online / real world identity I think have always been intertwined in certain ways, definitely aesthetically and in creative ways and how I share my ideas with the world.
