The stigma against those suffering mental illness is universal and unabating. This stigma persists even among those who are formally educated in mental health and those who are, admittedly, ignorant. This stigma leads to social exclusion which exacerbates poor treatment outcomes. This public stigma feeds into perceived stigma, where those affected internalize the expectation of ostracism. Unless we are prepared to undertake empathetic, raw dialogue concerning psycho-social functioning, this fault will only leave more victims.
Altered Perceptions is an art exhibition featuring work by artists willing to offer their personal experiences with mental illness. Due to biology or trauma, these artists experience the world in an a-typical way. Their art work gives the viewer the opportunity to see the world, not through new eyes but a new neuro-perspective.
The event was created in the hopes of highlighting voices that are often overlooked in the conversation about mental health~ those who are acutely suffering. With many of the pieces being of an interactive nature, we sought to provide a new psychological experience to the viewers for the sake of finding a starting point for compassionate discourse.
The exhibition will run from Friday September 18th until Friday September 25th. The exhibition will be open to the public from Monday-Thursday 6-10pm at 산지직송 작업직판장 Art Direct Outlet (10 minute walk from Sindorim Station.) Be sure to stop by!
