Yogiga was the setting for symptomatic MALAISE, in which brooding art stood on the now completely white walls of the space. The theme for this exhibition was conceived organically based on visual elements that emerged once the works were viewed collectively. Malaise not from the artists’ process or intention, but comes from viewing the work. The exhibition juxtaposed this feeling of visual alarm with an eclectic mix of music and craft beer.
The artists included:
A painter whose work implies physical violence in its process and visualizes violence with color, composition and subject. Her landscapes, on paper, sound like quaint genre paintings but are in actuality dark and atmospheric. She is a landscape and figurative painter at the end of the world.
A painter whose blunt and blatant brushstrokes describe its own species of darkness. While she paints a variety of subjects, her approach never strays and her composition surprises and delights in uncomfortable ways.
A mixed-media painter who constructs alien aerial landscapes. She places the viewer in suspension over her disconcerting terrain as a bird in flight or as an extraterrestrial visitor.
An artist, illustrator, and performance artist whom explores his own discomfort as his subject. He continually pushes his own boundaries for the sake of his work, both to develop artistically but also to explore the conclusion of his process.
A painter who creates with her own language a history of symbology. Using recurring motifs, impossibly small brushstrokes on epic compositions, and a surreal interconnectedness her work explores and decodes its own mysticism.
MALAISE was a one-day exhibition taking place on Satuday January 23rd. We are fortunate enough to be able to continue to explore this concept in MALAISE DESCENDING in which Jiwoo Choi, Andrea Dejong, Jenny Robinson, Ben Miller, and Gaetoe will be accompanied by additional work. MALAISE DESCENDING will be taking place between Feburary 1st to 27th with an opening party Saturday February 13th Samchungcharoo Gallery. Details here.
